Da Nang hosts first Asian Film Festival

The festival is being jointly held by the Vietnam Association for the Promotion and Development of Cinema, authorities of Da Nang, and the Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema.

DANAFF aims to recognize and honor outstanding Vietnamese and Asia-Pacific cinematographic works, promote them to the public, and foster the growth of emerging talents in the region.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ngo Phuong Lan, director of the Vietnam Cinema Department, stated that the festival’s theme ‘DANAFF – Bridging Asia’ focuses on celebrating films that embody humanistic values, unique artistic expression, and new discoveries, while also encouraging new Vietnamese and Asian talents in the industry, and presenting valuable works from Asian and Vietnamese cinemas as well as selected global films to audiences.

Visitors to the festival can enjoy the public screening of 89 films free of charge, a three-evening outdoor film screening, and a series of workshops on the development and cooperation of the cinema industry.

It also offers tours to local sightseeing spots for foreign participants.

Additionally, the festival will feature 12 to 14 films competing in the Asian film category, with grand prizes for best movie, director, actor, actress, and screenwriter.

The event will continue until May 13, with the awards ceremony and the closing ceremony taking place concurrently.

Giant calligraphy hat breaks record as largest in Vietnam

The work has been done on the initiative of Dao Thi Cam Suong, a calligrapher from Can Tho. The giant conical hat is made up of a total of 540 smaller conical hats, with calligraphy written on top. Suong has spent 89 days writing the calligraphy and finding connections to produce the finished product. The words written on the giant hat include sightseeing spots in Can Tho, folk songs, proverbs, poems, and the names of various provinces and cities across the country. She shares that the purpose of her work is to honour the beauty of the fatherland through pieces of calligraphy. Indeed, the giant hat is created from 540 small conical hats which themselves represent the country’s 54 ethnic minority groups. The diametre of the giant hat spans for more than eight metres, with the length from the tip to the brim roughly four meters and the length from the tip of the cone to the ground roughly six metres.
